of ma’at: women in egypt
Egypt has long functioned as a crossroads of civilizations and cultures, where enduring historical narratives continue to shape contemporary identities even as new research and discoveries prompt ongoing reinterpretation of the past. In response to the persistent misrepresentation of women in popular culture, media, and historical discourse, this project examines how photographic documentation of ancient representations of women, when placed in dialogue with contemporary photographic portraits, can foster a more nuanced understanding of women’s identities. Through photo-based fiber works, the study of this project highlights the vitality and complexity of Egyptian womanhood across temporal contexts. By visually connecting past and present, it seeks to challenge reductive portrayals and foreground authentic representations. As Khalil, Moustafa, Moftah, and Karim (2017) argue, “Profound knowledge of female role models, especially in the history of Egypt, can improve today’s gender role in Egypt and Middle Eastern countries,” underscoring the contemporary relevance of historical female representation.
